Burgers are the “iconic American food” and the common denominator by which many chain menus are evaluated by consumers, says Peter Gibbons, vice president for product development at Spartanburg, S.C.-based Denny’s.

They also are just plain fun to create, as evidenced by Gibbons’ new Slamburger--topped with hash-brown casserole, a cooked-to-order egg, cheese sauce and more (shown)--available only during late-night hours at Denny’s. If the fundamentals--high-quality products, a well-stocked pantry and a product-development infrastructure--are in place, he says, the only boundaries to burger creation are “the limitations of your craft—how good you are at it—and of your imagination.”
