Top of the Food Chains: Consumers' Choice in Chains 2009
Diners reveal which chains they find worth the trip, even when times are tough.
Kelly Smith Killian -- Restaurants & Institutions, September 1, 2009
In July, R&I released its annual list of the Top 400 chain restaurants; Consumers’ Choice in Chains picks up where that special report left off. Whereas the Top 400 examines revenue and growth at the nation’s largest chain concepts, Consumers’ Choice in Chains looks at what drives those operators’ success—customers.
Beyond soliciting evaluations of the chain restaurants that consumers patronize, the survey asks diners to name the aspects of the dining-out experience that matter most to them; it considers not only where they have spent their dining dollars in the past year but also whether they plan to return to the listed concepts. It ranks the leading chains on how well they deliver on eight important attributes—food quality, cleanliness, value, menu variety, service, convenience, reputation and atmosphere—and how successful they are at keeping customers coming back for more.
In this, the 29th-annual survey, 3,286 people were asked to give their impressions of more than 200 chains; the leading concepts in 13 categories are spotlighted on the following pages.
Often only a fraction of a point separates Platinum from Gold and Gold from Silver winners within a category as well as the top three from the rest of the pack. The significance of these thin margins cannot be overstated, as the proper execution of one small detail can be the tipping point in making an experience memorable and enticing guests to return.

MaryAnn- In reply to your question, the selection of Consumers' Choice in Chains winners is based directly on the responses provided by the more than 3,200 U.S. consumers who participated in the 2009 Consumers' Choice in Chains survey. Survey respondents are a representative sample of U.S. consumers weighted to match the population by age, gender, household income, ethnicity and region.

I just can't imagine how Olive Garden can score over Romano's Macaroni Grill and Carrabas...they are two of the best as far as variety and quality of menu...to me and alot of my friends and family...the only thing worth eating at Olive Garden is the salad...it's outstanding...everything else is horrible...please explain how you come to these ratings??? Thanks
